Benefits of lavender essential oil in aromatherapy massage
Lavender is the scent people reach for when they want to slow down. Here is what is in the bottle, why it is the classic choice for an evening massage, and how we use it safely.
The oil everyone recognises
Lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula angustifolia, the "true" or English lavender. It takes over a hundred kilograms of flowers to make a single kilogram of oil, which is why a good lavender smells so concentrated: floral, slightly sweet, with a fresh herbal edge. It is the most widely used oil in aromatherapy and the safest one to start with.
What is actually in it
The two main components are linalool and linalyl acetate, which together make up most of the oil. These are the molecules responsible for the soft, calming quality of the scent. Lavender also contains small amounts of camphor and eucalyptol, which give it a faint clean, cooling note in the background.
Why we use it for evening sessions
- Calming: the scent of lavender is the classic choice for guests who arrive wound-up and want to leave sleepy. Many people find it slows their breathing within a few minutes.
- Sleep: a lavender massage in the evening is a favourite with travellers whose body clock is still on another time zone.
- Gentle on skin: diluted correctly, lavender is one of the mildest oils, which makes it suitable for a full-body massage rather than just a spot application.
- Pairs well: it blends beautifully with lemongrass for a brighter, more Thai-smelling oil, or with a warm carrier such as coconut for a richer, slower massage.
How aromatherapy massage differs from Thai massage
An aromatherapy massage is an oil massage on a padded table: long, gliding strokes with light-to-medium pressure, the scent working through the nose while the hands work the muscles. It is slower and softer than Traditional Thai Massage, with no stretching. Choose it when the goal is to unwind rather than to loosen a specific tight spot — or ask us to combine a Thai session on the legs and back with a short aromatherapy finish.
Safety notes
- Essential oils are always diluted in a carrier oil before touching skin; we use a low massage-strength dilution, never neat oil.
- If you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions to perfume, tell us and we will test a small patch on the forearm first.
- Lavender is generally considered one of the gentler oils, but if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a medical condition, please check with your doctor before any aromatherapy massage.
- Essential oils are for the skin and the nose only, never taken by mouth.
- Keep the oil away from eyes and broken skin.
